Arthur L. "Max" Morgan Jr.

Four Decades of Grand Strand Course Care

No individual has shaped playing conditions for more Myrtle Beach area golfers than Max Morgan. Over four decades, he guided the agronomic practices for more than 25 Grand Strand courses, culminating in his role as Vice President of Agronomy for Founders Group International (FGI), the area’s largest golf ownership group.

A six-year Navy veteran (1974–1980), Max found his passion for golf while stationed in Pearl Harbor, trading the confines of a nuclear submarine for the open fairways that would define his life’s work. This passion led him to Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) and a career rooted in turf care and leadership.

From his early days as a HGTC student at Pine Lakes Country Club, Max worked his way to the top in the years that followed. Max held superintendent roles at various courses before assuming responsibility for all FGI golf courses in 2003.

Over the years, Max delighted countless golfers with consistently well-conditioned courses while mentoring generations of superintendents who followed in his footsteps. He brought technical expertise, calm leadership, and a deep understanding of both turf science and golfer expectations.

Respected for treating the course as both a business and a playground, Max prioritized playability, weathered hurricanes, floods, and ice storms, and always focused on making Myrtle Beach golf enjoyable for visitors and locals alike.

Above all, with God’s hand guiding the way, Max took pride in teaching, collaborating, and building bridges between maintenance crews and golf shop staff, ensuring the game he loved would thrive.
